What came first- the chickens or the blog?

By Royal Appointment

on January 10, 2013

It appears that everyone is keeping hens these days! Even royalty. If you are a glossy black maran or a brown welsummer, famous for laying dark brown eggs you may find yourself living in a chic, palatial oak chicken coop (on wheels) free ranging in your own little patch of organic heaven hand fed by a real prince every morning. (Bet he doesn’t clean out the poop though). There is a bright display of rosettes these royal hens win for their eggs at local country shows close to Prince Charles Highgrove Home Farm and estate in England.

So it’s no surprise that when it came to choosing a design for a range of earthenware china to sell to visitors of Highgrove Shop in Tetbury last year, the prince’s puff-chested, elegantly plumed chickens were top of the list.
Brought to life by the intricate artistic talents of Samantha Buckley, a former student of the Prince’s School of Traditional Arts, the royal flock adorns everything from mugs and serving plates to tea towels and note pads. Mind you, at £9 for a humble egg cup, you’d need to be married to a prince to afford them.
